Should I unblock my ex?

Blocking was a decision about protecting yourself. Unblocking should be one too.

By the When We Match team · Updated

The short answer

Unblock your ex only if the reason you blocked them no longer applies and you can see their profile, or hear from them, without it setting you back. If you blocked them because they were harmful, keep the block. If you're unblocking to check on them or to send a signal, wait until that urge has passed.

At the time, blocking them felt necessary. Maybe you needed to stop checking their profile. Maybe they kept messaging. Maybe you just couldn't handle seeing their name. Now some time has passed and the block feels heavier than the thing it was protecting you from.

Start with why you blocked them

  • To stop yourself from checking their profile or messaging them.
  • Because they kept contacting you after you asked them to stop.
  • Because the relationship involved cruelty, control or fear.
  • In the heat of an argument, and you've regretted it since.

The reason matters more than anything else here. If you blocked them because they were harmful, the block is doing exactly what it should. Missing them, or feeling guilty, isn't a reason to remove a protection you needed.

What unblocking signals

Many platforms don't notify anyone when you unblock them. But if they search for you, or you appear in their suggestions again, they may notice. Some people read an unblock as an invitation. Be honest with yourself about whether that's what you're hoping for.

Signs you might be ready

  • You blocked them for your own peace, and that peace is now steady.
  • You can think about seeing their posts without your stomach dropping.
  • You aren't unblocking at midnight, after a drink, or right after seeing them mentioned.
  • You'd be fine if they never noticed.

Signs it's too soon

  • You want to see what they've been doing, or who they've been with.
  • You're hoping they'll message you once they notice.
  • You already know you'll check their profile the moment you unblock.

If the urge is really about checking on them, a middle step can help: leave the block in place, and give it another month. Most urges like this fade faster than you'd expect.

If you're unblocking because you miss them

Sometimes the urge to unblock is really the question underneath: do they still think about me? Unblocking won't answer that. It mostly gives you a window you'll keep looking through. Our guide on whether your ex misses you is a more honest place to start.

If you'd like to know whether they feel the same without reopening the channel, When We Match lets you name them privately. They're never told. If they independently name you too, we connect you both — and if they don't, nothing changes and no one ever knows you looked.

Common questions

Does my ex know if I unblock them?

Most platforms don't send a notification when you unblock someone, but they may notice if they search for you or see you in suggestions again.

Is it petty to block your ex?

No. Blocking to protect your peace or stop yourself checking on them is a reasonable way to heal. It's only about you, not a message to them.

How long should I keep my ex blocked?

As long as the block is helping you. Unblock when seeing them, or hearing from them, would no longer set you back.

Find out if it’s mutual
