How it works
No first move. No guessing. Just two people who both decided.
When We Match is built around one rule: a connection can only form if both people, independently, reach for each other. Here is exactly what happens from the moment you sign up — and, just as important, what never happens to the person on the other side.
The short answer
You privately name one person — an ex or someone you had feelings for. They are never told. If they independently sign up and name you too, a person on our team reviews the match within 48 hours and a private chat opens between you. If they never do, nothing happens and no one ever learns you looked.
Step one
You sign up and name one person
You create an account and tell us — privately — who you're hoping to reconnect with. An ex, or someone you had feelings for but never quite reached. Their name, the links you have, roughly where and when you knew each other. It stays sealed. The person you name isn't contacted automatically, and nothing is sent unless you separately choose to (see "Send a hint by text" below).
Step two
We wait for them to do the same
This is the part that makes When We Match different by default. Nothing reaches the other person automatically — no nudge, no "someone is thinking about you." The only way a match forms on its own is if they independently decide to look for you too, sign up. Until that happens, your search simply waits — quietly, for as long as you want it to, unless you decide to send a hint yourself.
Step three
When you both show up, we connect you
If you each named the other, we have a candidate match — and only then does a person on our team get involved. When both of you have named each other and our team has reviewed and confirmed the match, a private one-on-one chat opens between you. There is nothing else to confirm. If you would rather not talk, you can simply end the chat — and the other person is only ever told that the chat ended.

Send a hint by text
Everything above happens automatically, without a message ever going out. If you’d rather not wait for that, paid members can separately choose to send one fixed, anonymous text to a phone number, letting that person know someone misses them and pointing them to a page where they can search too. The wording is locked — you can’t write your own message — and at most one hint can go to the same number per day.
We never tell them who sent it. If they don’t independently name you back, they never find out it was you — if they do, it goes through the same 48-hour review and match process as anyone else. Nothing is ever sent unless you ask us to, and anyone can permanently block a number from ever receiving a hint at whenwematch.co/optout, no account needed.
The 48-hour review
A name matching a name isn’t proof. Before anyone hears a word, every candidate match goes to a real person on our team for up to 48 hours. They cross-check the details you each provided — names, profile links, the city and the years — to confirm you’re genuinely describing one another, and not two strangers caught by coincidence.
If anything doesn’t line up, the match doesn’t go through, and neither of you is told there was nearly one. We would rather miss a real match than force a wrong one. When the review passes, a private chat opens between the two of you.
After the review
A private chat opens
Once our team has reviewed and confirmed the match, a one-on-one chat opens between the two of you — no contact details exchanged until you choose to share them. What happens next is entirely yours.

You’re never obligated to talk. You can leave the chat unanswered, end it at any time, or close your search. The other person is only ever told that the chat ended — never that you walked away, and never that they were the person you’d named.

What people ask first
What happens if my ex never signs up?
By default, nothing happens, and they never learn you were looking. Your search simply stays open — they would have to independently decide to look for you before either of us knows anything. If you'd rather not wait, you can choose to send them a one-time anonymous text hint yourself (see below); that's entirely optional. Without it, your search waits quietly until you close it.
Will my ex find out I searched for them?
No. The person you name is never notified, never contacted by our matching, and never shown that anyone is looking for them. The only way they ever learn it was you is if they independently sign up and name you too — and even then, only after a person on our team has reviewed the match. The one exception is a hint text, which only happens if you choose to send one, and even that never says who it's from.
How do you know it's really them?
Every potential match goes through a 48-hour manual review by a real person on our team before anyone is notified. We cross-check the details both people provided — names, profile links, location history, approximate age — to confirm the two of you are describing each other and not a coincidence. If anything doesn't line up, the match doesn't go through.
What happens if my ex finds me but I've moved on?
You're never obligated to talk. If a match is confirmed, a private chat opens — but you can leave it unanswered, end the chat at any time, or close your search. The other person is only ever told that the chat ended — never that you walked away, and never that they were the one you'd named. You're allowed to have moved on.
