My ex blocked me. What does it mean, and what now?

Being blocked feels like a door slammed in your face. Here's what it usually means.

The short answer

Being blocked usually means your ex needs distance to cope — to stop checking, stop arguing, or stop hurting — not necessarily that they hate you. Respect it: don't contact them through other accounts, friends or new numbers. Focus on your own recovery, and treat the block as their answer for now.

You go to open the chat and it's gone. Their profile doesn't load. Maybe it happened after an argument, maybe out of nowhere. Either way, being blocked by someone you loved can feel like being erased.

Why people block an ex

  • To stop themselves from checking your profile or messaging you.
  • Because seeing your posts was keeping the wound open.
  • To end a cycle of arguments, or conversations that kept going in circles.
  • Because a new partner asked them to, or they want a clean start.
  • Because they felt pressured or unsafe, and needed contact to stop.

Most of these are about their own coping, not a verdict on you. Blocking is often a sign that someone still feels strongly — people rarely bother to block someone they feel nothing about. But it's still a clear request for distance, whatever is behind it.

What not to do

  • Don't create new accounts or use a friend's phone to reach them.
  • Don't ask mutual friends to pass on messages.
  • Don't show up where you know they'll be.
  • Don't post things designed for them to see.

These can feel like small acts of love in the moment. From the other side, they feel like someone ignoring a boundary — and they almost always make reconciliation less likely, not more. Respecting a block is the one thing that keeps the door from closing completely.

What to do instead

  • Let yourself be hurt. Being blocked is a rejection, and it's allowed to sting.
  • Mute or block them back if you need to — not as revenge, but so you stop checking whether they've unblocked you.
  • Write the message you want to send, and don't send it. Most of what needs saying is for you.
  • Lean on people who care about you. Tell one friend the whole story.
  • If the breakup was recent, our guide on the no contact rule is a useful frame for the weeks ahead.

Will they unblock me?

Sometimes. People do unblock once the raw stage passes, especially if the block was about coping rather than fear. But there's no way to make it happen, and waiting for it keeps your life on hold. If they unblock you and reach out, you can decide then. Until then, the block is the answer.

If you still hope it's mutual one day

Being blocked doesn't always mean the feelings are gone on their side. But the only respectful way to find out is one that doesn't push past their boundary.

When We Match never contacts the person you name. If your ex, on their own, ever signs up and names you too, we connect you both. If they don't, nothing happens and they never learn you looked. It's the opposite of working around a block: it only works if they choose it too.

Common questions

Does blocking mean my ex hates me?

Usually not. Blocking is more often about needing distance to heal or to stop checking on you. It can come from strong feelings, not an absence of them. Either way, it's a request for space.

Should I message my ex from another account after being blocked?

No. Contacting someone who blocked you through another account, a friend or a new number ignores a clear boundary and usually makes things worse. If they want contact, they can unblock you.

How long do exes usually keep you blocked?

There's no typical length. Some people unblock after a few weeks once the breakup feels less raw; others never do. It's healthiest to assume the block is permanent and be pleasantly surprised if it isn't.

Find out if it’s mutual

Name them privately. They’re never told. If they name you too, we connect you both — if not, no one ever knows you looked.
