How to tell your crush you like them over text

A text gives you both room to breathe. Use it well.

The short answer

Telling your crush you like them over text works best when you already talk comfortably, you keep it short and honest, and you make it easy for them to say no without awkwardness. Say it plainly, don't hide it in a joke, don't ask for an immediate answer, and be ready to accept any reply gracefully.

Saying it face to face can feel impossible. A text is easier to write, and it gives both of you space: you don't have to watch their reaction, and they get time to think before they answer. Done well, it can be a kind way to say it.

When text is a good choice

  • You already text regularly and comfortably.
  • Seeing them in person alone isn't easy to arrange.
  • You'd freeze up saying it out loud, and want to get the words right.
  • You want to give them room to respond in their own time.

If you only ever talk in person, a sudden serious text can feel jarring. In that case, it may be better to ask them to hang out and say it there.

How to word it

  • Be direct. "I like you" is clearer than a riddle.
  • Keep it short — two or three sentences.
  • Don't hide it inside a joke you can retreat from. It makes their reply harder, not easier.
  • Give them an easy out, so they don't feel cornered.
  • Don't demand an answer right away.

Examples

  • "I've been wanting to tell you this for a while: I really like you, more than as a friend. No pressure at all — I just didn't want to keep it to myself."
  • "Honest moment: I've got a crush on you. Would you want to go out sometime? Totally okay if not."
  • "I like spending time with you a lot, and I'd love to take you on a proper date. If that's not your thing, no hard feelings — I'd still really like to be friends."

After you send it

Put the phone down. Seriously — go for a walk, see a friend. Replies to messages like this can take time, and that's often a sign they're taking it seriously, not a sign of rejection.

Handling their reply

  • If they feel the same: wonderful. Suggest something simple and specific to do together.
  • If they're unsure: give them time. Don't push for a decision.
  • If they say no: thank them for being honest, and mean it. "Thanks for telling me — I'm glad I said it" lets you both keep your dignity.

If you'd rather know first

For some people, even a text feels like too much exposure — especially if it's a friend, an old crush, or someone you'd hate to make things awkward with. Our guide on how to tell if your crush likes you back can help you read the signs.

When We Match offers another route: you privately name them, and they're never told. If they independently sign up and name you too, we connect you both. If not, nothing happens and they never know you asked.

Common questions

Is it bad to confess to your crush over text?

No. For many people it's kinder than in person, because it gives the other person time to think and reply without pressure. It works best if you already text comfortably.

How long should I wait for my crush to reply?

Give it a day or two at least before reading anything into silence. Serious messages often take longer to answer. If several days pass, it's fine to let it rest rather than follow up repeatedly.

What if my crush leaves me on read?

It may mean they're unsure how to respond. Avoid sending more messages. If they don't reply after a while, treat it as a gentle no and give yourself credit for being brave.

Find out if it’s mutual

Name them privately. They’re never told. If they name you too, we connect you both — if not, no one ever knows you looked.
