Can you be friends with your ex? An honest answer

Sometimes friendship is what's left. Sometimes it's a way of not letting go.

The short answer

You can be friends with an ex when both of you have genuinely moved past romantic feelings, the breakup wasn't about mistreatment, and enough time has passed. It rarely works right away. If you're hoping friendship will lead back to a relationship, or it hurts to hear about their dating life, it's not friendship yet.

"Let's stay friends" is one of the most common things said at the end of a relationship, and one of the hardest to actually do. Sometimes it's sincere. Sometimes it's a way to soften the blow. And sometimes it's a way of keeping a door open.

When friendship with an ex tends to work

  • You were friends before you dated, and the friendship had its own foundation.
  • The breakup was mutual, or at least calm and respectful.
  • Time has passed — usually months, not days — and the romantic feelings have genuinely faded on both sides.
  • You can hear about their dates or a new partner without it hurting.
  • Any new partners are comfortable with the friendship.

When it usually doesn't

  • One of you still has feelings and is hoping the friendship will turn back into something more.
  • The relationship involved control, cheating or cruelty.
  • You try to be friends immediately, without any space in between.
  • Every hangout ends with you analysing what they meant.

The honest question: what are you hoping for?

Friendship with an ex is often a way of staying close without having to say what you really feel. If you'd be quietly crushed when they start seeing someone, you're not looking for a friend — you're waiting. That's not wrong, but it's worth being honest with yourself about, because it tends to keep the hurt going for a long time.

If you want to try

  • Take real space first. Many people find a stretch of no contact makes friendship possible later.
  • Start small: a group setting, a short coffee, nothing that recreates old date nights.
  • Agree on what's off limits — rehashing the breakup, sleeping together, jealousy about new people.
  • Check in with yourself afterwards: do you feel lighter or heavier?

If friendship isn't really what you want

If you've realised that what you actually want isn't friendship, the friendship can become an uncomfortable holding pattern — you can't say it without risking what you have.

When We Match is one way out of that bind. You privately name them. They're never told. If they independently sign up and name you too, we connect you both. If they don't, nothing changes between you, and they never know you looked.

Common questions

How long should you wait before being friends with an ex?

Long enough that the romantic feelings have faded and you can be around them without hoping for more. For many people that's several months at least. Trying straight after a breakup rarely works.

Is it a red flag if someone is still friends with their ex?

Not by itself. Plenty of people have healthy friendships with exes. What matters is whether the boundaries are clear and whether everyone involved is comfortable with it.

What if my ex wants to be friends but I want more?

Be honest with yourself before agreeing. Accepting friendship while hoping for more usually means getting hurt slowly. It's okay to say you need space first.

Find out if it’s mutual
