What to text an ex you still love

The words matter less than the pressure behind them. Here's how to keep it light.

The short answer

Keep the first text short, warm and pressure-free — something that's easy to reply to and just as easy to ignore, like "I thought of you today and hoped you're doing well." Don't confess everything, relitigate the breakup, or ask for an immediate answer. Let their response show you whether there's room for more.

You still love them. You've accepted that, even if you haven't said it out loud. Now you want to reach out, and every draft feels either too much or not enough.

The principle: leave room

The best first message to an ex gives them space to respond however they genuinely feel. A long confession asks them to react to your emotions before they've had a chance to notice their own. A light message lets you both find your footing.

Example messages

  • "I thought of you today and hoped you're doing well."
  • "Saw [something specific] and it made me smile — hope life's treating you kindly."
  • "It's been a while. I'd love to hear how you've been, if you ever feel like catching up."
  • "Happy birthday. I hope this year is a really good one for you."

Each of these is warm, specific enough to feel personal, and asks for nothing.

What not to send

  • A long message about everything you've realised since the breakup.
  • "I still love you" as an opener, before you know where they stand.
  • Anything sent late at night, after drinking, or right after seeing them with someone new.
  • Questions designed to find out whether they're seeing anyone.
  • Multiple messages if the first goes unanswered.

If they reply warmly

Keep going, but gently. Let the conversation be a conversation. If it keeps flowing over days, it may become natural to suggest a coffee — and to be more honest about your feelings in person, where tone can't be misread.

If they don't reply, or reply coolly

That's an answer, and a painful one. Don't chase it. Give yourself credit for trying, and give them the respect of not pushing.

If you'd rather not go first

Loving someone who might not feel the same is exactly the situation where going first is hardest. When We Match lets you name your ex privately. They're never told. If they independently name you too, we connect you both — so you'd know the feeling is mutual before a single word is said.

Find out if it’s mutual

Name them privately. They’re never told. If they name you too, we connect you both — if not, no one ever knows you looked.
