When We Match

How long does no contact take to work?

Thirty days, sixty, ninety? The honest answer depends on what you want it to do.

The short answer

There's no fixed timeline. Many people use about 30 days as a starting point, often longer after a long relationship. No contact has 'worked' when you can think about your ex calmly and would be okay whatever happens next — not when they reach out. Measure it by how you feel, not by the calendar.

If you're in the middle of no contact, you're probably counting the days. It's natural to want a number — a point at which the waiting pays off. But how long no contact takes depends on what you're hoping it will do.

What does it mean for no contact to work?

There are two very different goals people have in mind:

  • To heal: getting your footing back, sleeping properly, thinking about them without your stomach dropping.
  • To get them back: hoping the silence will make them miss you and reach out.

The first is within your control and reliably happens with time. The second depends entirely on another person, which is why no contact 'for' an ex so often feels endless.

Typical timelines

About a month is a common starting point for shorter relationships. After a long relationship, living together, or a painful ending, many people find they need two or three months or more before the intensity really fades. There's nothing wrong with you if it takes longer.

Signs it's working for you

  • Whole days go by when you don't check their profiles.
  • You can remember good moments without spiralling.
  • You've started making plans that have nothing to do with them.
  • If they got in touch tomorrow, you'd feel curious rather than desperate.

Signs you're still waiting rather than healing

  • You check whether they've viewed your stories.
  • You're posting things for them to see.
  • Each day without a message feels like a failure.

That doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. It means you're still in it, and that's okay.

When the period ends

At the end of no contact, some people realise they no longer want to reach out. Others find the feeling is still there, but steadier. If that's you, you can decide from a calmer place whether to get in touch.

If you'd rather know whether they feel the same before breaking the silence, When We Match lets you name them privately. They're never told. If they independently name you too, we connect you both. If not, your no contact stays intact.

Find out if it’s mutual

Name them privately. They’re never told. If they name you too, we connect you both — if not, no one ever knows you looked.
